No Pun Intended But Ghost Adventures Is Dead.

Above: The Old Ghost Adventures Team

Well, I've just watched Ghost Adventures Season10 Episode 07: Nopeming Sanatorium.  For me this has to be the end as far as watching this as anything but "background".

The intro tells us how the team has worked for years to establish its reputation and gather "solid" evidence.  How true that was. Season 9 was bad enough, but tolerable but season 10 has produced Zak Bagans going more over the top than ever before.  Almost hysterical in his claims at times.  Every slamming door, piece of falling debris from deserted, dilapidated and downright falling apart buildings are signs of ghost actively responding or leading them on.

No "demonic force" on this episode?? Someone slipped.

I am getting VERY suspicious of some of their technical gear -I'd love to see a real, accredited professor of electronics or physics test this gear.  And "Hello" that they heard on the EVP recorder (folks, it is JUST a digital recorder) ....I listened... listened... listened... .nope. No "Hello".

And we see the team getting unprecedented access to a building and they are told a tunnel is dangerous and sealed off.  We then have smirking Bagans use a previous trespasser to push home the message that you must never ever trespass or break-in to property.  Good.

Oh.  Bagans and his team are, obviously, the exception.  They CAN pull all the rubbish used to seal off the entrance to the dangerous tunnel.  Hey, **** the site owners who are doing them a big favour by letting them into the hospital (I wonder what the reaction was when they saw the team break in?).  So what did they find? Seriously dangerous walls, ceiling and floor all on the verge of collapse.  Bagans is not going to risk his neck -he is fare too important after all.  No, their tech Bill goes down the tunnel.  Yay.

Have I mentioned I am also getting very suspicious of some of the people they talk to?

Season 10 has produced major events -Nick Groff going off to make his own show but his name is never mentioned nor was an explanation given for his absence.  Did he jump or WAS he pushed?  I'm beginning to wonder.

The other major events are that (1) there seems to be no real editing of the programme.  Leading on from that you have (2) what at times appears to be very bad acting in scenes that look like they were cut from a very badly financed horror film.  (3) There is a beginning to each programme -usually messy- but the middle and particularly the end leave you asking "What the ***** hell just happened?"

Three men, three cameras and three digital recorders were perfect. But watching seasons 9 and 10 I am beginning to wonder whether it is just the narcissistic Bagans with his over acting to be the centre of attention that is ruining things?  Is it his increasing ego -even Arron seems to be pushed more into the shade.

From the documentary right through to season 8 I was telling people that this was a series they really SHOULD be watching.

No more.  The Golden Age of Ghost Adventures was Seasons 1-8 but even by 8 Bagans was beginning to be THE centre of attention rather than the actual investigations.

Very depressing.

22,000 Views Is Not Bad....That Was THEN -This Is Now!

In October, 2015, I was slightly staggered that this blog had a dizzying 22,000 views since 2011. The total number of views (just registered by blogger to keep things sane since adding views from elsewhere trebles the total!) as of today stands at 345, 168  which is, what, 320,000+ more views in a couple of years?

It makes it even more mysterious as to why no books sell?

With 345, 168 views perhaps the suggestion of a You Tube show dealing with all things AOP would not be a bad idea -but as I do not have a production company it doesn't seem likely.

However, I would like to thank everyone who checks out the blog.

Thank You

__________________________________________________________________________

This blog is now reaching 22,000 views.  Not bad since on average (before I started posting more!) it only used to be 2-4 views a day.

I'm guessing that I must be doing something right, however, I no longer try to find what is attracting people because if you do find out what it is and start posting more of the same views drop off.  I think "pick and mix" is best!

I am sure you all have a reason for viewing this blog.  Interest.  Or (and if it is this one then PLEASE get in touch!) a personal experience. A blog is a little like a book.  You write something.  You know someone is reading it. You just have no idea what they think about what you've written!

So, please let me know what you think and if you have had a personal experience with something anomalous get in touch.

THANKS!

Yet Another TV Series Dumped ...For 'Reality TV'!

Right, my Google+ views have grown by over 10,000 in a week so I posted this item there first.  But everyone might as well know!

I've written three hefty books on strange phenomena covering ghosts, UFOs, unknown sea creatures, Sasquatch and so on.  I had hoped to start 2015 off with good news.

I was approached last October by a film company that wanted to produce a TV series based on material from the books.  I sent everything they needed.  Before Christmas I was told that in January we could get around to discussing money, production and so on.

I heard last Friday that the company owners think "reality TV is where the money is"  so all the work for nothing.  Fourth company to do this since November 2013.

Looks like TV will never see my glamorous face....hang on....I know WHY they are doing this!  I'm too gorgeous for TV!!!!!

Was it really a leopard that was spotted? No. That Was A Puma.

This item appeared in the Inverness Courier http://www.inverness-courier.co.uk/Opinion/Bill-McAllister/Was-it-really-a-leopard-that-was-spotted-06052011.htm

I was asked by someone if I had ever heard of large cats -leopards- in the area.  No.  Inverness-shire is home to puma (cougar) and their young, like lion cubs, are spotted.  Back in the 1970s, as a naturalist, it was a report -later reports- that drew my attention to large non native cats and I worked as a consultant with the Northern Constabulary because no established naturalists would deal with "silly stories" -though the late Arthur Cadman, a remarkable naturalist not only looked into reports but studied the puma and recorded young.

Loch Ness was a few reports and there were some well known personalities who saw puma in Inverness-Shire (no, I will not name them as Arthur talked to them and I was sworn to confidentiality and cannot break such a promise but it will all be in his records.

Sadly, newspaper reports are always the same these days so fun0-making is par for the course.  Now why do you think witnesses want confidentiality?

Juvenile pumas have been known to retain their spotting for a while and then you have a 'leopard' reported!

So, yes, I do know about them and it's fair to say there were reports in the Highlands going back to the 1950s.

Oh, and having contact with the reputable people involved in the "Felicity" case I can respond by saying  that only an ass of a journalist who was NOT there three decades ago would question the event.

Was it really a leopard that was spotted?

MYSTERIOUS animals strike a chord in our psyche and the Highlands has a rich tradition in such sightings. The newspapers last week featured the ‘beast of Embo’, sighted by sisters after 18 sheep had been killed.

It sent my mind whirring back to 1980 and the celebrated Cannich puma which generated the kind of tabloid frenzy nowadays generated by Jordan’s Hindenburg-like cleavage or Cheryl Cole’s latest lip gloss.

There had been mystery animal sightings in the North a long time previously. The Daily Express reported back in 1927 that in rural Inverness-shire sheep and goats had been attacked by an animal a shepherd described as "like a leopard but without spots". A strange description unless it was the first case of a leopard actually changing his spots. Like the guy telling his mate: "I’ve just spotted a leopard" and his pal replying:"Don’t be daft, they’re born with spots".

Anyway, The Express reported that traps were set and a creature was caught which was sent to London Zoo where it was identified as a lynx. Later it turned out London Zoo had no record of receiving any such animal. It was the biggest animal tall tale since there were three bears and one married a giraffe. The other two put him up to it.

In 1973 there was a "big cat" sighting in Strathnaver, Caithness, by a retired Glasgow police sergeant - and remember, those hardy guys in that era were not prone to dubious eyesight or wild flights of imagination unless giving evidence at a villain’s trial. The sergeant reckoned a puma with a rabbit in its mouth jumped in to the path of his car, almost colliding with it.

It was reported in 1977 that a man and his nephew at Farr, 10 miles from Inverness, "saw a lioness and two cubs" in a field and the next day a similar sighting was recorded at Culduthel. It definitely wasn’t a buffalo, which allows me to ask what did the buffalo say to his son when he was leaving?
"Bison".

In July 1981 a workman coming off shift at the McDermott oil platform construction yard at Ardersier saw an animal "larger than an Alsatian, identical to a puma" come out of undergrowth and cross the road. On Christmas Eve the same year, again at the McDermott yard entrance, someone reported his headlights had caught a tan creature "larger and heavier built than a Labrador dog". Yes, I know, some more sceptical readers might speculate whether these witnesses had, in fact, seen an Alsatian and a Labrador.

Then again, in July 1997 a man from Kirkintilloch who caused a three car pile-up on the A9 near Ralia, just south of Newtonmore, told police that he had seen a black and white creature "about the size of a Great Dane" jump out in front of his car, making him lose control. Some might suspect a shaggy dog story, but at Inverness Sheriff Court, Sheriff James Fraser found the charge of careless driving not proven.

Eleven years ago four golfers playing at Nairn Dunbar contacted police to say they had seen a large male lynx 30 yards from them as they stood on the seventh green. I know about birdies and eagles, but a lynx on the links?

All these pale into insignificance compared to the commotion at Cannich on 29th October, 1980. There had been cases of livestock harmed by a mystery cat in Glen Affric for a couple of years. Farmer Ted Noble, who died eight years later, erected a trap with a sprung door that was connected to a sheep’s head inside the cage and reported catching alive a fully grown female puma.

Cue a stampede up the glen of Her Majesty’s media as the event rapidly became UK-wide and international news. But there were different views. When the photograph of the puma’s face in a cage was published in two competing tabloids, one headline stated:"Grrr!", but the rival headline was "Miaow", claiming the animal was as tame as a tabby cat.

The Puma of the Glen was taken to a new home at Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig where the director Eddie Orbell stated that, in his view, the puma had never spent as long as 30 minutes in the wild. It refused to eat an unskinned rabbit and would only take prepared food. It was reported to be very overweight and tame.

This monstrously savage creature apparently enjoyed having its tummy tickled. And was named Felicity. Like mixing a hyena with gravy, it became a laughing stock.

Amidst widespread suspicion of a hoax, with one particular journalist the centre of suspicion, no proof of this was ever forthcoming. The huge publicity made Felicity a favourite with visitors to the park, where she remained until her death in January, 1985. Her body was stuffed and put on display at Inverness Museum.

What really happened in those eventful days in Cannich 31 years ago? And who do you believe? Some reckon Felicity arrived in the glen via Land Rover, others believe she was one of a family of pumas in the area. Karl Popper, the Austrian philosopher, said: "Ultimate truth is unattainable". And maybe that’s true about how Felicity came to be in that hillside cage.

But the phenomena of mystery big cats continues, as the episode in Embo shows. It is suggested that new laws on the keeping of dangerous wild animals in the 1970s led to some owners turning their beasts out in to the wild. This could conceivably account for some sightings.

In recent years beavers have been reintroduced to Argyll and a Sutherland landowner wants to bring back wolves after a 400-year absence. The argument for wolves is that deer and rabbits cause great damage and nature, red in tooth and claw, taking its course might be beneficial. Those who keep sheep will be less relaxed.

But they say that on a cold night up Cannich way, particularly when strong drink is taken, you can hear on the soft breeze the haunting cry of a puma. Pining after its cousin, who has flitted to Embo.

There Is NO "UK Bigfoot"

I keep getting asked about Bigfoot in the UK.

Sigh.

In Medieval times there may have very well been a relict population of wild man BUT they certainly did not survive after the 15th century.  There are absolutely no accounts of wild men after that.  I dealt with regular men and women who were living feral -including in the wilder parts of the UK (hermits almost)- in Some More Things Strange and Sinister.

It is only in the past 7-8 years that there have been such claims from what might be called the fringe of Cryptozoology in the UK.  The people I avoid.  Knocks and even "calls" I have heard have no comparison with those recorded in the US/Canada.  Footprints -fake.

I cannot put it simpler than that.  It's just plain rubbish.

Fantasy and money-making.

Naja, Ich Bin Wirklich Ganz Normal!

Someone from Germany asked whether I could publish On Books And Stuff And Why I Am Really Quite Normalfrom 2011 in German.  As it incorporates my article Dalborn: Tales From A German Wood I thought "Why Not?"

Apologies if the German is not up to scratch!
****************************************************************************

Kein solches Tier existierte.

The world's first English-language book on the searches for the elusive relict hominoid (popularly known as the snowman) in the lands of the former Soviet Union, written by Russian researchers themselves.

The information is given in full detail, soberly discussed, arranged geographically and presented chronologically, from the accounts of medieval travelers to the sighting reports of the current decade.

Numerous observations of relict hominoids in the wild or in captivity include a case of interbreeding with humans. But is the snowman a reality? This book does its best to answer that very question.

Well, this is a book I wanted to get hold of for years but never managed to -the price for a copy was way too steep but now, well I bit the bullet and ordered a copy.  If you search around on the internet you can get the best price.

So I received the book Tuesday and decided to sit down and read it.

I got to the last page at 23:20 hours.  It was a very fascinating book.  I did this with Bayanov's last book, Bigfoot Research The Russian Vision which you will find reviewed here:

http://terryhooper.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/review-bigfoot-research-russian-vision.html

Some material from this book is repeated in the larger (previously reviewed) book but there is a great deal that, if my memory serves me right, was not included so reading the papers again is like reading something new anyway!

And what a book this is.  I think that it is fair to say that, annoying though it may be to our American cousins, researchers in the old Soviet Union actually led the way in field work and scientific research on the subject of Relict Hominoid research  It cannot be argued as all the facts are there in print.  There was the officially approved search for the "snowman" in 1958 (under the watchful eyes of a border police unit), then the attacks by those who ridiculed the subject but refused to even look at the reports or go on any field trip.  People that my late colleague Franklyn A. Davin-Wilson defined thusly: "Expert. "X" ="The Unknown" and "Spurt" ="A Drip Under Pressure"!"

Some hominologists, such as Vladimir Pushkarev, paid the ultimate price in the quest and others such as Maya Bykova faced a certain amount of name calling and derision and in Bykova's case it was because of her unshakable stance in not identifying the witnessor the geographic location of the sightings, including her own, of the hominid named "Mecheny" and I think her reasons were sound if annoying to other hominologists.

If you are involved in studying wildlife you are acutely aware that for every group of supporters there is another group wanting to hunt/kill.  Badger groups in the UK are very secretive and not surprisingly so. There are also mammals and birds that have been/are being reintroduced and there are people who want to hunt and kill those re-introduced species.  Between 1977 -2007 I was a wildlife advisor to UK police forces on exotic species, mainly large non-Native cats.  I would talk to country estate owners, game keepers, naturalists, villagers, police officers and many others but there was one edict I set myself and that was "by neither word nor deed to cause harm to any animal".  There are people who knew of animals locally but would not talk until they knew that even there names were given in total confidence let alone a sighting location.  Even the police kept quiet!  There were hard times when I was offered what I consider to be very high and ridiculous amounts by national newspapers for a map of which animal was there. I rejected all offers.

So, if you are taken into the confidence of a person(s) locally you keep your word.  If you are given the opportunity to get a first hand viewing of a hominid and you are sworn to secrecy then you record everything you can.  Locals granting you that opportunity are accepting you as a trusted friend.  You do not betray that trust.  Bykova never did. And then you have the very protective locals who think you should leave hominids alone -Nikola Avdeyev came under fire for closing in on a hominid's home:the warning was very clear -"Leave it. Go!"

There are researchers named in this book who should, rightly, be as well known as Ivan T. Sanderson, Bernard Heuvelman, John Green or Rene Dahinden.  They went into the remote parts of the old Soviet Union and they spoke to locals, found out histories and regional names for hominids.  Documented personal observations and much more that makes a great deal of what far better financed American researchers have done look like "basics" (and I am not insulting North American hominologists here).

What I found fascinating is the history of what we call "Bigfoor", "Yeti" or "Almasty" back into ancient times -the relics and records of their existence.  It is amazing and even with all of this available to the more learned historian in the West what have they done?  They confine these accounts to fairy tales and myth because "these things don't exist" -but I could write a book on that attitude alone!

How Russian hominologists solved Horse mane-platting as "natural"....but then got a shock.  Habits, descriptions, histories that I have read elsewhere but which were watered down somewhat.  This book may need up-dating since it was published in 1996 but it is the source if you want the first hand details from the people who did the work and were there rather than the cut-up versions by authors who were not.

It is rare for a book to actually grip me enough to read it in one go.  I can only give it my highest recommendation as a must buy if you have even a passing interest in the subject.

Sadly, the current situation in the fragmented country is such that researchers really cannot travel as far and wide on field trips as they used to. War and political turmoil are the enemy of any serious field worker -there are enough dangers without having to risk being shot at.

This book does Russian hominologists, the founders of the science, true justice.  Perhaps one day some TV people will not treat them as "the Russian oddballs" in their documentaries but will take them seriously and give them and the work they have done the respect they are due.

Loch Ness Monster Photographed?

There are similar patterns to this 'monster' in the water.  Note that it is a cove so the likeliest explanation is a wave,  The other patterns in the lake are waves.  Money for nothing!

Swedish man scoops prize for picture of Loch Ness Monster despite NEVER visiting Scotland

A SWEDISH man has scooped a prize for the best picture of the elusive Loch Ness Monster - despite NEVER visiting Scotland.

Swedish man wins Loch Ness Monster competition

A Swedish man spotted this picture, which he claims shows the Loch Ness Monster, on Google Maps
Bjarne Sjöstrand, 52, spotted a long, thin object looming in the water as he scoured Google Earth from his home computer in Stockholm - 800 miles away from the Scottish Highlands.

His eagle-eyed find has led to him winning the best Loch Ness Monster sighting of 2014, a competition run by bookmaker William Hill.

The Google image, taken above Horse Shoe Scree on the loch's southern side, was chosen from five contenders in the annual contest.

The curious snap topped an online poll on the Inverness Courier's website, which attracted a total of 92,000 votes, and was confirmed by judges to be the year's most intriguing image.

Mr Sjöstrand said: "I'm very happy to have won the prize. I am very interested in anything regarding Nessie and the history of Loch Ness.

"The reason I found this image on Google Earth was that I was sitting one night at home reading about Nessie and Loch Ness on the internet and thought I would check to see if I could see something from above - and that proved to turn out well.

"I have never been to Scotland but my hopes are that one day I will visit Loch Ness."

Gary Campbell, who keeps the official register of Loch Ness Monster sightings, said Mr Sjöstrand's find echoed other reports of large eel-like objects in the water.

Bjarne Sjöstrand
"Something like this cannot be explained," he said.

"I would like to see further analysis of the photograph carried out."

He added the result showed the continued international interest in Loch Ness and the mysterious monster.

"Nessie is much bigger globally than people realise," he said.

His sentiments were mirrored by Rupert Adams, public relations manager for William Hill, who said the number of votes cast demonstrated the popularity of the monster mystery.

Mr Sjöstrand won £500 for his fascinating image, and all five finalists received a £50 bet on the winner of the William Hill Scottish Cup.
