Franklyn Angus Davin-Wilson

You know, Franklyn Angus Davin-Wilson really ought to be far better known than he is.

I first met Franklyn at a Bristol meeting of the British Flying Saucer Bureau (BFSB f. 1953) back in 1976, I think. I was speaking to a few people and grabbed a break when this short, skinny chap wearing a Russian style fur hat came up to me. Someone said to me:"That's Franklyn Davin-Wilson" and then moved off. Franklyn stretched out his hand and beamed a huge smile -displaying a large set of canid teeth. I shook his hand and said "Fox teeth aren't they?" His smile grew as he popped out the false set of teeth he had a dentist make from fox teeth. "I like you!" he said.  Apparently people normally gasped or backed off when he gave them his vampiric smile!

Franklyn had become interested in UFOs reports after leaving the army in the 1960s and reading the accounts of astronomers and astronauts about their own encounters. A former Bristol Grammar School student (the BGS seemed to spawn, uh, "eccentrics"!) he was a founding member of the British Computer Society as well as a keen astronomer. Franklyn was a constant ally while I was at the BFSB as a committee member and later editor of its UFO News Bulletin and his support continued on into the days of UFO International.  Along with Dennis Cowdy, a founder in 1952 of Manchester Flying Saucer Research, Franklyn was at the core of the Anomalous Observational Phenomena Bureau and Project Grey Book.

Franklyn advocated that every published UFO account should not be accepted as suitable for inclusion unless there was a second or third source -even then, the more sources the better and if you could check the report yourself -much better.  This has stuck to me every day since.

In the mid-1970s Franklyn even advocated the use of computers in UFO reports analysis and also for the analysis of UFO photographs.  He did design a computer card system for BUFORA but they seemed to drop the idea.

His specialist field of research were Signals From Space, Astronomers and UFOs, Unidentified Orbital Objects and photographic analysis.

Franklyn could be somewhat fractious at times when dealing with fools and although interested in the possibility, after speaking to Leo Sprinkle at a BUFORA Convention (scribbled on a margin of the notes of his meeting is :"The Day Mountbatten was murdered") on retrievals of crashed "flying saucers", Franklyn was in two minds because "so many of the buggers are supposed to have crashed!"

As seemed to be his wont, Franklyn often set me off on searches and some lasted decades -"The Vampiric Sheep Killer of Badminton" started after Franklyn mentioned the case featured in The Books Of Charles Fort and thirty years later I wound the whole mess up and even discovered a lynx had been shot at the time. There are others but I still keep busy on those.

On New Years Eve, 1983, Franklyn felt unwell and went to bed.  He died of a heart attack caused by a possible blood clot.  He was around 43 years old. He was the third member of the AOP B to die of a heart attack (Dennis Cowdy was the first) but his loss was deeply felt and his research notes are still with me.  Every new years eve at Midnight I remember the old sod.

But oh those wild goose-chases and the chase across Cradle Hill after a 'UFO' will always be in my mind.

Roswell Hoax Exposed

The arguement is that USAAF files pertaining to Roswell AAF field for 1946-1948 are missing for no reason. Why 1946 I have no idea but the people who believe this tripe think it is significant.  In fact, records DO exist. Even the foil and balsa wood framed item retrieved from Roswell exists.

UFO Files did a good 42 minute documentary looking at the facts -facts, how do I explain that to Bill Birne or Stanton Friedman? - and I would highly recommend it.

Roswell and the never-happened UFO crash of 1947 are BIG money spinners. Like all the 60+ other UFO crashes since 1947 and the 200 plus alien bodies recovered it is a nod-and-a-wink piece of fun that is okay in Sci Fi shows but not when claimed to be true.

Puma Tracks UK

Some very interesting news last night. Around 21.00 hrs I was trying to relax and watch a movie while reading when the phone rang.  It was a woman (DD) I had been in contact with before about possible puma sightings in the area she lived in (let's say "the North").  There have been good sightings and descriptions over the years but activity seems to have picked up.

The area has rabbits and deer and there has been some chicken house raiding going on.

While out walking, DD and her husband spotted deer tracks in the soft ground but also some quite large, non-canid tracks.  Displaying good common sense, the couple photographed the tracks before attempting to cast them with plaster.

One plaster cast didn't look too good but did show it was not a dog.  However, the second cast is so clear I had no problem declaring it to be puma.  However, I am currently awaiting a reply from a professional tracker whose opinion I want because that opinion would hold far more water than a statement by some over-bearded old naturalist in the UK (though I have identified numerous tracks for UK police forces).

Did Smeja Kill A Sasquatch?

What I find scary is the fact that Smeja claims his friend repeatedly shouted not to shoot as it was a person in a suit.  "It wa'nt no bear".  A second, "little one" approaches and he shhots it in the neck.  So he's shot an adult and then a young Sasquatch. His shooting partner totally against the shooting.

Listen to the interview.  Smeja is either a liar and a hoaxer or, if this was the truth (I doubt it) then he needs to be assessed for mental competency and have his hunting/gun licence revoked because he is describing the behaviour of sociopath.  Someone told that he is about to shoot a guy in a costume and then admits he thought that himself but still fired and goes on to shoot another one should NOT carry a gun. There is no confusion and if there was any good hunter will tell you that you do not fire!

Personally, I'm labelling this a hoax.

Roswell? Aurora? Kapustin Yar? Don't Believe it

It seems to me that Ufologists waste a great deal of their time looking for evidence that there have been over 60+ alleged "flying saucer" crashes (most of them in the United States) and the military has enough aliens to populate Manhattan.

These aliens are supposed to use such advanced travel systems that they can vanish on the spot, re-appear, perform gravity defying manoeuvres and all this after avoiding meteors/meteorites/micro-meteors plus all the other hazards of space travel.  Rockets and bullets and even artillery bombardments do not affect them.

One gets to Roswell, New Mexico, develops a problem and crashes killing all on board.  The Roswell incident has been a big boost to the towns economy and with over 100+ people all having "vivid recall" of events in 1947 I'm sure there is more to milk.  I'm sure more witnesses will appear.

Roswell got the financial boost it needed once Ufologists decided there was something -anything- to latch on to after over 30 years of avoiding the incident that first appeared as a snippet in Frank Scully's Behind The Flying Saucers.


The alleged crash at Aurora, Texas in 1897 needed such a boost but never really got it.  The town had been decimated by a fever and much more and the promised railway line never happened.  We know that there is no grave holding an alien body. In fact, not one thing claimed about any flying saucer crash in Aurora has proven true other than the fact that UFO investigators found that there was a well and wind tower.  Okay, a well and a wind tower. Believe me, there are Ufologists who claim that is proof of the incident.

While running the AOP Bureau I had to deal with quite a few "UFO explosions" and debris left behind.  I also had the dubious pleasure of scrambling over 'UFO wreckage' and once even got offered photographs of a dead alien.

"But" say the Ufologists, "We have the FBI telex message proving that a flying saucer crashed at Roswell!" Hmm. Let's look at what the Telex says:

FLYING DISC, INFORMATION CONCERNING.   MAJOR CURTAN, HEADQUARTERS

Now, let’s look at this evidence (if in writing only) that a flying saucer did crash at Roswell: “The  

disc is hexagonal in shape and was suspended by a cable.” So this interstellar craft was suspended by 

a cable to what resembled a weather balloon with a radar reflector.  At the time Project Mogul was very

hush-hush so no one would tell even the FBI what this was.

 Photographs of U.S.A.A.F. officers holding tin-foil like material may show some of the balloon, or

 it could be fake material so that Soviet agents could not see what the real material looked like.  But

 that was it. If NASA thought it could get to the Moon using a balloon and a piece of cable I’m sure 

they would have tried.  

But Ufologists can't get the story straight.  The recollections of witnesses are "as clear to them as though it 

was yesterday" but then what of the discrepancies, some quite big in these statements? "There are bound to 

be the odd difference after all these years" -?

And the rest of the story that Jessy Marcel was immediately sent off with the wreckage.  At that same time 

he is photographed at the press conference displaying the silver material.  Leonard H. Stringfield once told me 

at a BUFORA conference that "these crashed UFO stories are going to explode!" 

He was right.

And Russians shooting down flying saucers and retrieving the dead or living crews? The AOP B did have

people operating in the former Soviet Union and every single story fell flat.

I'll make this clear because, after almost 30 years of looking it is what I have found.  There is absolutely not

 one solid piece of evidence that any extra-terrestrial craft ever crashed on Earth and it and its crew

were retrieved by any government.

How good are 'eye-witness' statements?  Well, I can claim here and now that I have been time travelling and

who can prove it either way? I bet in a year I could collect a good few witnesses to the event.

We need good solid evidence: material and statements gathered at the time. 

If Ufologists concentrated on the reports rather than the mythology perhaps they might have had the solution

to the UFO riddle by now.
